Long ago, very long ago, farmers used pigs to hunt for truffles because of their great nose and love for this "tuber". But it is also because of this love for the truffle that they had to give up using them. The pigs always ended up eating some of the truffle, if not all !
Hard to handle, no very obeisant, they started training dogs.

Dogs if well trained are good truffle hunters, so the farmers just started using them!

Try to train your dog:
Bury a truffle about 10 cm underground and let it there for 1-2 days so the earth can impregnate of its perfume. Then bring your dog to where the truffle is, make him dig or help him dig. Once you get to the truffle, stop him and bring his nose toward the truffle so he gets a good snif of it. Take the truffle and give him a reward like a small sausage or anything he loves. After a couple of times he usually will understand that each time he finds a truffle he will get a reward.lic

They are other ways to look for truffles, but you sure will need a little bit of luck too!

- Method "du Brulé":
First you have to look for either oak or hazelnut trees. Once the truffle grows underground, it's going to chase all the plants nearby: you will see a small parcel of land around the tree with no vegetation, which will mean that there is a great possibility that truffles are near by.

- The Fly Method: "chasse a la mouche":
Some kind of flies lay their eggs where truffles grow. So by looking for flies, you have some little chance that a truffle is not far underground!
